Chess: Added support for public game visibility by anaqreon · Pull Request #81 · redmatrix/hubzilla-addons

At the new game form you can select public visibility, so that unauthenticated observers can watch the game if they know the game URL.
Also removed some logger calls and fixed some formatting issue...

I started working on a public visibility option. You can follow my progress here:

https://github.com/anaqreon/hubzilla-addons/commits/chess

To make things easiest, my goal is to add an option to the new game form to make it publicly visible or not, but not allow an arbitrary ACL for spectators yet. The tricky part is making a new page template for spectators that allows them to watch the game unfold in real-time as well as browse the game history but without any other interaction.

Comments and suggestions are welcome.
mrjive

that is something like {{t('string to translate')}} ? Sorry for the noob question
Andrew Manning

Exactly, but not inside curly braces. It would be in the php function that populates the template variables with their values.

In the last days I found GM Yasser Seirawan (https://lichess.org/@/yasser-seirawan ) and IM Eric Rosen on lichess (https://lichess.org/@/EricRosen ) \o/

(BTW I had a game in a simul witth Eric Rosen. He's been really nice and kind in the chat. Aslo sent a message to Seirawan, who kindly answered almost immediately)

Now it seems that also the World Champion has an account there:

I am four pints in, so expect genious. ;-) Black Pawn at D3 can move "safely" to D2, because Bishop at H6 protects the black pawn from white Knight at C4. If black Pawn at D3 reaches D1 it is promoted to officer, Knight, Bishop, Rock or Queen.

I think the promotion to officer is the strongest

Aronian wins historic 2nd World Cup

Image/photo

Levon Aronian defeated Ding Liren in both 25-minute tiebreak
games to win the 2017 World Cup final and $96,000 in prize money. In the first
game he unleashed a novelty that proved too hot for his Chinese opponent to
handle. Liren then came close to winning on demand in the second, but one imprecise move after some ingenious defence from his opponent made it mission impossible. Aronian had won the World Cup before in 2005 and
called winning his second title and qualifying for the Candidates “just a dream”.
Next up is his wedding on Saturday!

Is anyone able to help test the updated Chess plugin? You need a hub running dev branch, since I just merged all the updates into the hubzilla-addons dev branch. I could provide some temporary beta tester channels on dev.hubzilla.org for those without access to a hub running dev.

Some items to test:

  • Game interface usability across screen sizes
  • Stalemate
  • Checkmate
  • En passant capture

Anyway, it seems to work great.
I will play some games with a friend and will give you feedback then concerning your 4 points. May take however a while.

so far i can say this:
Rochade moves work too!
The mobile view works, but its not easy because of the overlaps of the side window and firefox oftens me to "save the image" (of the board), instead of moving the figure.
I will try to test the other points in the games too.
Thanks anyway for this great improvement Andrew! ??
Andrew Manning

Hey great glad you enjoy it :-)

Andrew Manning

I almost have the legal move enforcement option implemented, a feature several people have requested. Although it seems obvious now, I didn't realize that the chess.js Chess() object needs to know the full game history in order to know, among other things, whose turn it is and who can castle. We have all this information available, obviously, but what is not obvious is how to initialize the Chess() object. I suppose every time the page is loaded, the game history will need to be fed to the new Chess() object move-by-move until it is current.

Chess is like driving for me in this way; two dimensions is plenty to deal with.
Andrew Manning

Okay, things are starting to work. If anyone wants to help me beta test this thing please add my hubzilla-addons fork to your git remotes and checkout the chess branch. There are a lot more little details to work out, based on the unexpected effort I went through detecting whether a player is castling, or making sure to automatically end the game when checkmate/stalemate is reached, etc.
admin

will test it at weekend.
